THE UTOPIAN THE ST THOMAS MORE COLLEGE COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

From the Head of College

W elcome to the winter edition of the St Thomas More College community magazine, the Utopian. It is the College’s intent to produce this magazine each winter and summer in order to keep students, alumni, and friends of the College abreast of what is happening in the general life of the College as well as what is being done to secure an exciting future. I assume that I will be forgiven for focusing primarily on the construction project in this particular article. As the Archbishop has described it, this project effectively represents a relaunching of the College. While acknowledging the rich history that has gone before us, there

is no doubt that this project was essential if St Thomas More College was to have a future. The initial infrastructure was feeling its age and was not in keeping with the youth, exuberance, and optimism of the students within its walls. Next year we hope to maintain that spirit and culture whilst providing magnificent new facilities and programs for the students. Building one reached the top floor many weeks ago and Pindan have been actively fitting out the one- bedroom apartments beginning on level one and working their way up. Interestingly, with building one and particularly the administration area, we are already making alterations to suit an evolving staffing structure. A full review of

the College staffing was undertaken a few months ago and it became very clear that with our expansion and particularly with our diverse offering of accommodation, the College desperately needed a full- time registrar. We have made an excellent appointment in Melinda Carnachan who commenced on staff at the start of May 2015. Melinda has handled an enormous amount of learning in a very short period of time. Our processes and procedures are changing on a daily basis as we become more familiar with the requirements of our expansion and our compliance in order to attract our government funding for the NRAS rooms. Melinda joins a small but dynamic team that is charged with the responsibility of guiding the College
